First-time parents of a newborn are often concerned about diapers, and rightly so. First decide on whether you would like to use cloth diapers or the disposable ones. The former are made of natural cotton and therefore safe, but these need to be cleaned and sterilized after each use. The disposable diapers are great for convenience, but they have lots of chemicals infused in them that make them a health hazard. The best is to use a mix of both.

Baby’s Poop

Remember the fact that most often, during the initial days of changing diapers, the baby and mother are still in the hospital. The baby is well taken care of by the trained nurses.

A baby passes the first stool within a few hours after birth. It is called Meconium and is a thick, tar like greenish stuff. When the baby starts breastfeeding or taking formula milk, transitional tools are passed which are lighter in color and less thick. A baby will also pass urine every two to four hours.

Types of Diapers

It is necessary that you are aware of all these as it will help you to anticipate nappy changing and help you plan for it. If you have decided to use cloth diapers, then it is advisable to buy a set of thirty. While the diapers of a given day are being cleaned and steam-pressed, you can have sufficient number of fresh diapers. There are different kinds of cloth diapers, choose the ones you prefer. Ensure that the material is cotton and not synthetic.

How To Change Diapers

Before attempting to change the diapers, keep everything nearby. This is necessary, so that you do not leave the baby unattended to fetch something. You will need clean towels, napkins, baby wipes and spare fresh diapers. Place a clean towel or sheet. Rest the baby gently on the changing table or bed. Ensure proper head support.

Undo the tabs of the old diaper and raise the baby by lifting the baby’s ankles or legs. Pull the old diaper away gently and put it aside for proper disposal afterwards. Clean the baby’s bottom and insides of thighs gently with a wet tissue. Wipe properly in a way that avoids the spread of bacteria from the soiled areas. Use as many wipes as required.

Keep the baby exposed to air for a few minutes so that the skin is dry. Meanwhile inspect baby’s skin to look for any infection or rashes. Apply diaper rash cream if required. Lay the fresh diaper under the baby by lifting again. Gently pull the lower end between the legs and put the tabs at the hips. Check that it is not too tight. That is all too it.

Change diapers every three hours or earlier if it is wet. During nights when the baby is sleeping, you can use a disposable diaper as they keep the baby dry longer. In a few days you will master the art and science of changing baby’s diaper.
